A mechanism for the juvenile-to-adult transition in fishes!

چکیده
The conventional view (Hoar, 1970; Liley, 1970; Harvey and Hoar, 1979) of the sequence of events which, in fish, leads to first gonadal maturation and subsequent spawning, starts with "environmental stimuli" which the brain and pineal gland process and pass on to the hypothalamus, which passes its information to the pituitary; gonadotropic hormones are then synthesized and released which leads to the maturation and release of gametes, given suitable environmental conditions (including a mate). Other more elaborate schemes allow for feedback loops (Kuo and Nash, 1975), but share with the linear sequence outlined above the feature that they invariably start with "environmental" or "external" stimuli. The conventional view of the link between growth and reproduction in fish is that of a "reproductive drain", i.e., the notion that fish, once they have reached sexual maturity, have a slower growth because the "energy" previously available for growth is, in mature fish, redirected toward the production of gonadal material (Jones, 1976; Lagler et ai., 1977). It is argued here that these conventional views can be replaced by a single hypothesis with the help of which a number of otherwise irreconcilable observations on the growth and reproduction of fish can be explained. b) a medium time scale (weeks to months) during which gonadal maturation takes place, as triggered by environmental stimuli; and c) a long time scale, in which the age and the size at which a fish becomes sexually mature for the first time are determined.

The effects of different dietary levels of organic and inorganic selenium on some growth performance and proximate composition of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Selenium, a trace mineral complement is used as cofactor of antioxidant enzymes that protects fishes against environmental stress agents and enhances performance in fishes. In this study the different levels of organic and inorganic source of selenium were included in juvenile rainbow trout diet to evaluate feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain percent (WG), cond...

Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), is one of the common echinoids widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it occurs from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa to Japan, Australia and Malaysia. To investigate the developmental basis of morphological changes in embryos and larvae, we documented the ontogeny of D. setosum in a controlled laboratory condition at the In...
متن کاملOtolith and scale morphologies of doctor fish (Garra rufa) inhabiting Kangal Balıklı Çermik thermal spring (Sivas, Turkey)
Garra rufa is one of the most popular therapeutic and commercially important fish in ichthyotherapy. Otolith and scale morphology provide new and useful information for fish identification and classification. Left-right asteriscus and lapillus otoliths from juvenile and adult doctor fish, and the scales from 6 different regions of the juvenile and adult fish body have been examined in Kangal Ba...

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is an uncommon histiocytic cutaneous lesion. It is a type of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis(WHO Class IIb). The mean age of onset is 2 years of age. The adult form of JXG is relatively rare. The most common affectedarea is the face or the scalp and most of the lesions are less than 5 mm in diameter. This lesion tends to show a self-limited course over several m...
